The wiki answer is partially correct:

This works out to a very large number, 10,068,347,520

Here is where they use a false logic to reduce the number:

*********
The last step is to understand that the order of the 6 numbers is not significant. That is, if a ticket has the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, it wins as long as all the numbers 1 through 6 are drawn, no matter what order they come out in.

Accordingly, given any set of 6 numbers, there are 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 6! or 720 ways they could be drawn. Dividing 10,068,347,520 by 720 gives 13,983,816, also written as 49! / (6! × (49 - 6)!),
*********

This last bit of logic is not correct . What is false is that the logic assumes you know what 6 numbers will appear. This is not correct in real life. Who cares if the set 6 numbers can be drawn out 720 different ways - no one actually knows which 6 numbers will be drawn in advance hence the actual chances of picking the correct six numbers still remains at 1 to over 10 billion.

*******

I wonder which lottery Sales BS expert put this bit of horse crap together !!!

I read your site trying to win our local lottery which is a porgy 1.9Million Local or 950K USD. I did a search and found a wikipedia article that disputes your claim that the odds are 10 billion to one. You see that article concludes that although when combinations of 6 out of 49 numbers must be chosen when order is significant then 10B/1 is the correct statistic. However when the order of the numbers does not cound then you improve your ods to ~14M. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lottery_mathematics

You've got a 1 in 57 chance of matching 3 numbers and 1 in 13,983,816 of matching 6 and getting the jackpot. That, and full randomness is the same. Wanna play? fair enough, but missing a week or using different numbers won't make statistically any difference.

Look through the window, it is sunny and the birds are singing. Use your time more efficiently (specially if you are playing for the money, not the joy).

Ross,

Formula on how to calculate nCr for Lotto 6/49, 49!/(43!*6!), will give you about 1 in 14 million chances of winning.

Hello Guys

Sorry Ben but your absolute reliance on a calculator explanation will just create ongoing problems. Is there a formula that is listed or detailed ? what method do they use - or is this a completely unsupported statement - worthy of the lottery marketing department. Do the math - use the simple formulas as stated and you will see the numbers are correct. Yes you can use your calculator to multiply.

Hello Thomas - there are no "exacta" lotteries to my knowledge. It does not matter what order the winning numbers are drawn the actual formulas do not change. In all the public lotteries - the winning numbers are the six drawn. The order does not matter. You can not compare lotteries with horse racing.

Agreed, this is not how the typical lottery works. If you were conducting a lottery that worked like an exacta...meaning you had to choose the numbers in the exact combination as they are drawn. So if the winning numbers were for example drawn in this order 2 27 31 47 16 5 you would have had to pick the numbers in that exact order...and in that case yes...your odds would be 1 in over 10 billion.

Sorry, but your odds are incorrect. The chance or correctly choosing 6 numbers correct out of 49 possibilities is 1 in 13,983,816. See mathematical combinatorics, or the nCr function of your scientific calculator.

An interesting method to pick your numbers ! It´s a fact that there is no mathematical formula or whatsoever to guarantee you a big lottery win. But there is one rule : to win, you got to play. If you don´t play, you can never win. And if you play, it´s always better to have some kind of a system or strategy. So I wish you good luck, and I hope that you keep us informed.
